Using extra line to upgrade more often?

I am on Go5G Plus with two locked phones and a free third line without a device.

When the iPhone 16 comes out (for example), could I acquire and trade in an old device on the third line to get the free iPhone 16 promotion (assuming it will be the same/similar at that time) and then swap eSIMS between the free third line and my current line, effectively allowing me to upgrade early with my main phone number?

Then I could trade in every year and swap eSIMS every year since my upgrades would be staggered a year apart.

Or does swapping eSIMS make the balance immediately due on phones with promotional credits?
