I like to think of this subreddit as the center of the Titanfall community, or at least where you are likely to find the most players. There's a lot of talk about Titanfall outside of the community, and most of it involves player count. And due to the lack of Global leaderboards, or "active online" counts we don't really have anyway as players and fans to say "this is how many people play the game".
I'd say its safe to assume we are in fact a smaller community being that this was the first release in the series, and that it was only released on Microsoft exclusive platforms (Windows, Xbox one, Xbox 360). It's obviously not going to match up to something like Call Of Duty, where their are players playing across 3 generation of consoles and over 10 games. Or for our PC brothers in arms, the Counter Strike community, a community that's been going strong for almost 15 years.
We are obviously, not huge, but I also don't think we are THAT small. You know, as much as everyone on the internet as well as most gaming website articles would suggest. The fact that Respawn has refused to give us or anyone else for that matter any statistics on the player count of this game really concerns me.
TL;DR: Do you think the community is as struggling as others would like to have us believe?
