One of my friends who doesn't use Reddit has been looking for a childhood read for some time. Here's her description:

I have tried to find the name of a sci-fi book I read as a child and haven't been able to find it. The only thing I remember about it was that it was post-Apocalyptic, and the few survivors were living in rooms surrounded by layers and layers of hanging blankets. The boy in the story had to go outside to chip frozen shards of oxygen into a bucket and bring them into the room to thaw them so that everyone could keep breathing. Does that ring any bells with you? It was probably published in the 70s-ish. I'd love to figure out what book that was.

Thank you for any suggestions!
