Sp I remember reading about some kind of online distribution protocol that was made for static content. It was like a directory of plain text pages with a bit of markup for making links between them. I guess css didnt exists back when it was used, nor js, but it was a bit posterior to bbs. The content was static with zero interaction between the content and the user.
I know there are still some of those directories that can be read, where the content is like a tree that goes branching.
