I’m trying to think of the word or phrase to describe the trope(?)/writing rule that you should never include unnecessary information in a story (unless you are purposefully throwing the reader a red herring).
For example, if the author constantly make reference to a door at the end of a hallway that seems to get stuck, you’d interpret it to foreshadow an obstacle in an escape sequence. If the sticky door is only there to buff up the worldbuilding and the word count but is never mentioned again or used as a point in the plot, the idea is that it should be removed from the text so as to not mislead the reader.
Not sure if there’s a specific word or phrase here but would love some help. Fairly certain I read it in a child comment in an AskReddit thread.
