I think the man singing was an older white man, heavier build, wearing a suit? But I could be completely misremembering xD I think he started singing to cover over an awkward part of the scene, and others joined with him to help make whatever was happening less awkward? While watching it, I remember laughing hysterically and thinking it was such an unexpected and brilliant move, and wondering if it was improvised.
