so, I remember seeing this film when I was like 5 or 6 on tv (so roughly '94-'96 but the movie might be older) where some young teens who learn about magic/science try to escape a dystopian society where people who go against the status quo have their minds "erased" or similarly affected. the teens are being chased by government officials. I remember two scenes specifically. the first one, the kids go to find a wise man who apparently knows a place where the teens can escape to, but by the time they find him, the government has already erased his mind and they barely escape, while the wise man wanders into the desert (lots of desert imagery in this film, as I recall). In another scene, the teens are escaping through a maze of tunnels with dead-ends that are filled with poisonous gas. they are being chased by the head govt. officer (main bad guy, possibly had a goatee?) and the officer gets pulled into a poison tunnel by a big, strong, mute guy (I think he was bald?) who is trying to help the kids escape. eventually, the kids make it through the tunnels and are finally free. does anyone have any ideas?
