This is a book or maybe a book series for young adults or children. I remember that the protagonist's father was an absent-minded professor, and the "bad guy" was a colleague of his at the university who he always argues with. At one point they try to land a light airplane and make excessive maneuvers because they are arguing about the landing. The protagonist's mother gets angry because they could have been killed. Also, I'm pretty sure that at some point the whole gang goes into outer space. I have some vague visual memories, so I think it might have been illustrated. I would have read it in the mid to late 70s.
Edit: Found it. Danny Dunn and the Anti-Gravity Paint.
