I think this was a series of at least two novels, maybe young adult, definitely science fiction, probably from the late 70s or early 80s. I read it sometime around 1985-1987.
The main character is a psychic or empath or something like that, and at the conclusion of the first book, is forced to use his powers to kill. In the world of the book, this destroys your powers because you are traumatized by feeling someone die psychically. In the second book, there's a rich guy living on a space station who has a drug that can give the main character his powers back. I think there's also a love interest in the second book.
The main character's name might be Cat or Kat or something like that, or he might have eyes that look like a cat, or somehow there's a cat involved. I originally thought the title of the book was Catseye, but that doesn't turn up anything related. (It is not the Andre Norton novel.)
Any ideas gratefully accepted.
