[TOMT][Book][1980s] Looking for help w/a book! About a 7th son of a 7th son, read when I was in middle school (I’m 40). He discovered magic, he had a piece of dried seaweed that turned into a ship that flew, he had an angry small broken wooden horse inscribed with Dim Dom (meaning Not This!)

This post is actually for my wife (me! 😄) and I love fantasy books. I remember one book I had about the above topic, I can’t remember if the objects were left to him by a family member or if he found them in the attic, etc. He was a young boy, middle school age I think, and I don’t remember much of the plot, except that he “used” the objects (the seaweed turned into the boat and I think he went on adventures? A quest?) he had other objects but he should NOT have used the broken horse (Not This!) but he had to for some reason, and bad things happened. I can’t find the book at my parents’ house and google searches are fruitless. Please help and thanks in advance!
