I don't know what instrument it is for sure, but I'm going to assume it's a cello. It starts of with a deep sound and then moves into a sad violin piece. I seem to remember hearing it in a lot of funny youtube videos where a flashback or emotional black and white scene would play. It's not the music from Platoon which I know is another common piece used for flashbacks, it's definitely deeper sounding and more dramatic.
