It's an older sci-fi novel, like written in the Arthur C. Clarke, Heinlein time.
It was set on Earth, at some point in the 1990ās or so, where the Church of the Anti-Christ was gaining in popularity, because they were preaching end of days sermons, and were actually broadcasting over the air.
What happened in a sort of perverse fulfilment was that Aliens visited earth. They were insect-like, with wings, kinda like wasps. They communicated through ritualised motion using their limbs and wings, and they considered humans less than animals because we were not as graceful, and could not fly.
They lived on these floating ships in the upper atmosphere, and started brutal conquest of the planet.
They basically ran riot over the cities of the world, āraining pearls and jewels to some cities and acid on othersā (literally), totally without seeming rhyme or reason. They made āmana fall from the heavens in desertsā, and decimated fields and razed forests.
They cured illnesses and slaughtered thousands, and humanity was helpless.
One of the highest ranked Aliens, either a Queen or a high ranking Princess was mated to the head of their military, and because he was not as graceful as her, she treated him with scorn.
She acquired a human as a āpetā, and he used to be tortured and beaten, just for the amusement of the aliens, the way boys will torment a cat or dog.
She also attempted to mate with him, and it might have been this that caused him to either jump, or get thrown off the ship by the military head, and the Queen/Princess demanded that he be rescued before he fell to his death. The military head acquiesced to her wish, but signed rather clumsily āI will fulfil your request, but the price will be terribleā, it was done clumsily because it was a message that was rarely used.
At some point, maybe because of this, she was stripped of power, blinded, her wings torn off, and she was exiled to earth.
She met the human at some point later where he was led to a group of Christian freedom fighters, who were living underground in caves, she was brought before him, wearing a cloak, and when she raised the hood he saw what had happened to her. She had converted to Christianity, completely humbled that after the wanton cruelty her race had inflicted on humanity, she had found forgiveness and acceptance.
I was too young to fully appreciate the message of the book, but even 20 years later it has stayed with me. I would love to read it again as an adult, to see if it has held up.
