The first book starts off with an old man being transferred to the slums for a crime, and he hands out food rations to an old couple. He has a weapon, which is supposed to be forbidden.

The rest of the book follows a younger man trapped in VR who is handling quests for some reason, with the people who put him in VR trying to kill him. One of the quests involved a liar in Cleopatra's court, (Chicken in a Pot would Crow when the liar touched it; the liar never touched the pot.)

Another of the books had a castle that was about to be under siege, but I don't remember the details.

Any help? It was a Young Adult series.
