Modern (not historical) story of a woman from New England studying Samoan culture (or maybe just eels). Takes a trip to the islands between Australia and Tasmania. The night before she leaves she is at a bar and meets a Samoan man who she leaves with. She then decides to extend her stay and they eventually get married and have kids.
This is a first person story about her academic work and her struggle with cross-cultural relationship. Then raising biracial kids. I can't remember anything else. Super great personal insights.
