Twenty five years ago, when I was in the first grade, one of the stories in those giant school books was about a young boy who doesn't quite get along with his father.
His father is upset because the son broke his father's trophy--but it's this weird purple trophy.
The son goes to his grandfather and asks about it and learns that his father was the only one to complete a race in the pouring rain and that nobody was there to see him finish. The grandfather was the one who made the trophy.
I remember the plot quite well but not an author or a title which makes looking it up quite difficult.
Any answers would be greatly appreciated.
