I'm looking for the title/author of a short story, probably from the Victorian or Edwardian era. (Maybe by Walter de la Mare?)
It's about an English person in foreign country who doesn't speak the language. This person is given a message or letter or note for some reason, and every time they show it to someone that person is horrified and refuses to talk to the English person or explain what's so terrible about it. It ends (I think) with the English person dying from a heart attack without ever finding out what the note says.
