I remember this princess who had to get married, but she didn't want to I think? There were these rituals with dancing and swords and contestants would be slashed across the cheeks as a honor thing. Lots of talk of the princess' scarred face.
There was a boy who taught himself to hear things very far away. Lots of talk of him zoning out sounds progressively. Then he might have tried to steal a sword by walking across a singing floor without triggering it?
There might have been a desert.
It was a series of books, maybe 3?
I read the French translation at 8 so details are a little fuzzy.
