I have put quite a bit of effort into finding this piece of media but to no avail.
The movie begins with a "bad guy" trapping a princess in a vault, to be sealed there for eternity. The princess and style of the vault were reminiscent of ancient Egypt.
The movie follows a group of British guys many, many years after the intro of the movie took place. I don't remember much about anything about the film besides how it opened and how it ended. The characters spoke with English/Scottish accents and it was a typical animated adventure affair.
The protagonists ultimately fail in their attempt to get into the ancient vault but there is some other victory for them because the movie ends with everyone at a tavern toasting and singing "for he's a jolly good fellow."
The final scene is an interior look into the fabled vault where it is revealed that the princess never escaped as you see her skeleton in the same spot she was sitting with her crown atop her head.
I am not sure why the princess was locked in the vault initially but if my memory serves me correctly, she was trapped in there because "she is the most beautiful treasure."
This movie really affected me as a young child (3-4) watching it. I remember I would cover my face every time the movie ended and the princess skull was revealed.
I had this movie on DVD in 2005. It came in one of those very thin, black cases and I believe had a purple border. I am almost certain this was a straight to DVD release. I think it was purchased at Books-A-Million in Maryland but I'm not certain.
I'd love to hear if anyone else remembers this movie and I'd love to find it to face this childhood horror. Thanks :)
