[PS1/PS2][early 2000s] RPG - Dragon Quest-like game. Character wakes up in cave, turns into dragon.

I can't quite remember if this was an original PS1 or PS2 game, and it seems like it was one of the Dragon Quests (but none of the 1-8 series wikipedia page sounds like this or details the beginning).
I vaguely remember the main character waking up in a cave, and you have to escape - when you finally do, you collapse outside the cave. The character turns into a Dragon with special attacks throughout the game as you gain power, but that's all I really remember.
