Platform(s): DOS.
Genre: Real-time strategy game/army builder with a fantasy style.
Estimated year of release: Early 1990s.
Graphics/art style: Top-down pixel art sprites. Levels are predominantly 2D.
Notable characters: None. I'm not sure there were any names at all. Individual soldiers in your army had randomly generated names.
Notable gameplay mechanics:
You start with a small crew of fighters and archers. Killing enemies earns the individual characters XP and gold, which allows you to purchase additional units.
Levels often had treasure and power ups. There were typically multiple branching paths you could take. Potions were the most common powerup.
Each level's map opened with a sort of loose story explaining what your army had been doing and the scenario that was about to unfold in the form of a journal entry. There were many paths to explore in the story.
In between levels you could spend resources to level up characters, which unlocked new abilities at certain tiers and what gave them more resilience.
The game was on a "100 best games compilation"-type CD. I got the sense that it might have been unfinished, but I never beat it.
