Obligatory this happened last week.
So I got a new-to-me car recently. Came with two keys, but only one key had the remote buttons to unlock it and operate the trunk. Because of the change, my new car key doesn't fit on my key ring, so it it currently separate from my other keys until I find a suitable replacement.
Same as the last car, I gave my gf the spare key, in case she ever needed it. I work nights, and she occasionally needs to move my car around while I'm sleeping. In doing so one morning, she discovered that they key I gave her doesn't open the door. It starts the engine, but she can't open the door when it's locked.
In my old car, I did not have power door locks. I'm only just getting used to the ones I have now. Sometimes I'll use the remote to lock the car after I've gotten out, but sometimes I'll just push the door-lock button as I'm getting up, then close the door behind me.
So I'm heading to work, and I reach into my pocket for my keys. Uh-oh. No car key. That means it's in the car. And I've locked the door with the button. Meaning it's really locked in, because the spare doesn't open the door.
Borrowed my GFs car to drive to work because I didn't have time to deal with it. Not really an issue, she's WFH, and I'm home before she starts her workday anyway. I go to work, come home, go to bed, thinking we'll deal with it when I wake up.
Now, I'm a forgetful doofus. I've locked my keys in my car many, many times before. So often, in fact, that I have a standard remedy that involves jimmying a thin piece of metal through the door frame to push the release button. I've gotten to the point where I'm so practiced at this, I expect the whole operation to be over in less than a minute, because it's so straightforward. Gf thinks I should call CAA (the auto club) and have them open the door, but I'm adamant that I can do this, to the point where I insist she comes to observe. She's so worried I'm going to damage my car, she not only comes with me, but brings her key because she wants to try it in the lock again before I get started, just in case.
We get to the car, she tries the key in the lock. I'm hovering nearby, thieves' tools at the ready, waiting for my moment to shine when I can pop the lock open and save the day (which, remember, I imperiled in the first place). The key doesn't turn. I can barely control a smirk at her helplessness, when her hand impulsively pulls up on the handle.
The door opens.
Turns out, I had NOT LOCKED THE CAR. AT ALL. And left the key in plain view on the seat.
I'd like to pretend I'm not that stupid, but let's face facts. I'm *exactly * that stupid. Thank God she lives in a good neighbourhood.
TL/DR: Left my UNLOCKED car parked for about 24 hours with the key visible on the seat.
