On my way to work this evening, after having slept only five hours between my fourteen hour shifts, I decided to swing by a smart mart for some overnight caffeine.
The idea with smart mart is to be nice and quick, no people, basically a gas station/corner store in vending machine form. Including flaws, I learned today.
I order a Pepsi and two monsters (the energy drink), paid around eight dollars, and waited for the conveyor belt to deliver my goods.
Two monsters came fine, but my Pepsi got caught on a corner, and started rolling in place rather than toward me!
I should have cut my losses and left, but in a sleep deprived moment of panic, I decided to throw something at the Pepsi to attempt to dislodge it - it was just barely stuck, the lid propped perfectly against a corner! I threw the only thing I could grab. One of my monsters.
I missed completely. The monster flew over the belt and into oblivion. Then the conveyor stopped, the door closed, and I was left with a single monster, two dollars in my bank account, and a sinking realization that I'm an idiot.
I finished the 9 dollar monster during the drive to work, in rush hour traffic. I still have nine hours in my shift.
I had considered it, but honestly, it's not that much money, and I don't think whether or not I get a refund will influence whether or not I shop there anymore (not worth the potential time loss if I'm on my way to work and the vending fails again).

I recently dropped my life and moved across two time zones to support my mother and siblings. Only one in my family to go to college, so I'm the only one who makes decent money. Living check to check at the moment, as my only option, but all the bills were paid, and my account is still a positive balance, so a victory.
