The actual FU happened about last year, but I’m facing the consequences of it now. Last year, one of my friends was starting the process of separating from his now ex wife. He told me that she would be taking the car, thus leaving him without a car. He was my friend for 10 years, so I of course said yes when he asked if I could co-sign for him to get a car. After all the paperwork was done I had told him that if he ever needed any help with a payment to let me know, not only to save my credit if it were ever in jeopardy, but as a bro too.
Fast forward to three months ago where I started getting letters in the mail from unpaid toll tickets and calls from the bank saying that he was two months behind on payments. I reached out to him asking what was up with the toll tickets and the missed payments. He told me that he was out of work for about two months, hence why he was behind on payments. He eventually blocked me after constantly asking him if he’d payed off the tickets and the due car notes.
Now I might be stuck paying a car that I don’t even drive let alone like in fear that he might miss out on another payment in fear that he might get it repossessed and damaging my credit. I feel both betrayed and angry, I just don’t know what to do.
TL;DR don’t co-sign for your friends no matter how long you’ve known each other for.
