Live acoustic version (I have cried to this so many times)
Lyrics:
Standing on the edge of the palisades cliffs
In the shadow of the skyline very far away
A lightning rod that couldn't pull the storm from me
I was 5 years old my best friends older brother died
He fell from these cliffs
The river washed him away the current pulled him downstream
In our eyes, floating in the headlights, so we parked these cars
Parent's garage
Listen to the lullaby
Of Carbon MonoxideWar all of the time
In the shadow of the New York skyline
We grew up too fast falling apart
Like the ashes of American flags
The sun doesn't rise
We replaced it with an h-bomb explosion
A painted jail cell of blood in the sky like Three Mile Island
Nightmares on TV they used to sing us to sleep
They burn on and on like an oil field
Or a memory of what it felt like
To burn on and on and not just fade away
All those nights in the basement the kids are still screaming
On and on and on and onWar all of the time
In the shadow of the New York skyline
We grew up too fast falling apart
Like the ashes of American flags
And we're blowing in the wind
We don't know where to land
So we kiss like little kids
We used to be very tall buildings
We've been falling for so long
Now your eyes follow the sign on the edge of town
They offer a welcome when you are leavingWar all of the time
In the shadow of the New York skyline
We grew up too fast falling apart
Like the ashes of American flags
The pieces fall it's like a last day parade
And the fires in our streets start to rage,
so wave, to the people that long to wave back,
from the fabric of a flag that sang "love all of the time"War all the time War all the time
All of the time
War all the time
War all the time
All of the time
All of the time
War all of the time
About the song:
- The band came up with the song during a sound check when Tom Keeley stumbled upon the riff.
- It is one of the few songs to follow the same progression throughout.
- The song became the title track as it lied in the center of the album and drew ones attention to what the album is about. The title of the album is inspired by the Charles Bukowski poetry collection of the same name.
- Geoff Rickly explained to song, like the album, to be about a lot of things and tried to structure it like the 1999 Paul Thomas Anderson movie, Magnolia.
- The first part is about him growing up in a town with a lot of suicides and how through friends and relatives it trickled down and affected them. It wasn't until later that he realized this to not be a normal thing. It's about feeling like maybe they were too close to NYC and it was coming out of it and wrecking everything, which, however, was not the case since a lot of his friends from the city has similar experiences.
- The second part is about him moving to New Brunswick and finding the punk-rock community where everyone was independent and they made their own rules and plans etc. It's about how they found their own little spot with all the bad things that were happening.
- The third part is about living in New Brunswick and trying to figure out love and navigating through broken relationships, how you could be so close to someone one day and then not know the next.
- The last part is about hoping that in the end it's all about love and not war, friction and disaster. Full explanation.
- The music video was shot while on tour with Deftones.
- They also performed it on Late Night with Conan O'Brien on 23rd November 2003. If someone can find a video of this it would be awesome! I remember the band re-sharing it through someone's Instagram story.
What are your thoughts on the song?
If you have any additions/corrections in the post, comment...
I really enjoy writing these posts so was wondering, does anyone read these?
