Are throuples looked down on or just misunderstood?

Have only been in a dedicated throuple for about a year now, and since I'm slowly starting to get out there and learn more it seems more and more that polyamory or ENM groups seem to strongly dislike throuples? Is there a dispute or bigger difference I don't know about? Or am I just hanging in the wrong groups?
