Reading T&F shipping fanfics

Lately I've been reading certain Thomas fanfics regarding romance between two engines and I have been wondering something since I've seen posts demonizing it: why is the ship of Thomas and Emily seemingly disliked? To me it seems like an interracial coupling unless people are just judging Tender Engines in general as adults while Tank Engines as children
