German or Italian first?

Hello, I have wanted to learn a language for a while. (I am from the US) I did some Spanish in high school but forgot all of it because I wasn't interested but besides that I haven't done anything. Both German and Italian interest me since I am really interested in history but I am not sure which one to learn first. If anyone has learned one or both and has any advice on what is easier to learn as my first second language that would be great.
