I feel it was completely unnecessary for what they did with the outright annihilation of Kate and Toby’s marriage. It was just so unlikely that two people such as them that were drummed up through the entire show as soul mates to end up being shown as if they were never meant to be together at all. I for one didn’t really like much of the last season at all. I know it had potential to be a lot more than it was. They got pretty good points for the train episodes but overall it was terrible how they went about it.

NOBODY understood Kate more than Toby did and the fact that they had to write Philips backstory with tragic details shows you how they didn’t trust the audience to like him without feeling deep sympathy.

Furthermore I honestly stopped liking Kate after she made her own father go back into a burning house for a dog.
