In 1970, there were 37.2M women of childbearing age (15-44) in the US, as compared to 64.6M now, a 74% increase. 1970: CDC, page 20, 2019: Statista
In the years prior to Roe, it is estimated that 1.2M illegal abortions were performed annually, resulting in 5000 deaths. Vice.com
To compare:
1.01M people have died of Covid in the 2.5 years since the pandemic started, fewer than the number of illegal abortions performed annually. Our World in Data
Just under 3000 people died in the 9/11 attacks. Wikipedia
4419 US military members died during the seven years between March 19, 2003, and Aug. 31, 2010, in Operation Iraqi Freedom. US DOD
2218 US military members died during the thirteen years between Oct. 7, 2001, and Dec. 31, 2014, in the Afghanistan part of Operation Enduring Freedom. US DOD
If the right to abortion returned to pre-Roe status in all states, given the increase in the population, we can loosely project that approximately 2.1M women would seek an illegal abortion and almost 8700 would die.
