As math enthusiast, I am sure we are all aware that there is a shockingly low number of people required to be in a group before two of them share the same birthday. But what about close birthdays?
I was recently asked if people in my family tended to have birthdays that clumped together, and we do. (I'm going to guess that most people do.) For example, my mother and her mother had birthdays two days apart, on May 4th and 6th, as did my stepbrother and I, July 17 and 19th. My sister and our paternal grandmother had birthdays exactly a week apart.
I know that given a range of n days, there is a 2n 1 range centered around the birthday of person A in which person B can be born to meet some definition of "close. But I can't figure out where to take it from there.
