New player- question on army composition

As I build up my collection I'm struggling to understand how Deathwing units fit into my list. Can they be included in the same detachment as Intercessors & other primaris units, or do they need to be in a separate one?
Does the same answer apply if I'm running my army as a successor chapter? Still undecided on paint scheme. Guardians of the Covenant are neat.
