I’ve been a Smiths fan since 1983 ( yes, I’m that old) and have read pretty much all of the available literature and old articles about the band. For those who are interested, the best and most comprehensive book ( imo) is The Enduring Saga Of The Smiths by Tony Fletcher. The book specifically explains Manchester in the early 80’s, the origin story about how Johnny and Morrissey were introduced and the influence of all 4 members Irish heritage ( all the members had parents of grandparents who emigrated to England from Ireland). It’s a fascinating read that captures how ambitious they were and the cultural impact they continue to have.
