First off, I am definitely aware that many may not agree with my take.
I've been running my (very part time) private practice for a year and a half, struggling greatly with all of the usual difficulties that new practices tend to go through ie. finding clients!
I used to do the 15 min free consults since I was trying anything and everything to gain clients. I have had a grand total of one person follow through with me after a free consult, out of probably 10 altogether.
For the first time yesterday, I rejected a free consult when she asked. The potential client had booked me, 3 hours later cancelled it, and then emailed me asking for a free consult instead.
I resent that there is this standard to work for free in our industry (yes, these consults are WORK!). From a business perspective, I needed this client. I understand that therapy is expensive and people want to ensure they pay for someone they like, etc., however, the best way to discover if a therapist is a good fit, is to book the paid session. All of my relevant information is on my website, in terms of experience and practice. I'm no longer afraid to be politely transparent about this anymore.
If I had it my way, no therapist would offer them anymore, and we wouldn't have this BS standard. Just my POV.
