Therapy for the perpetrator of abuse
Post Body

LSW with 1.5 years of experience (18 years out of grad school).

I was just assigned a patient referred by DCS and I read the referral. Avoiding identifying details, the patient was the perpetrator of physical and extreme emotional abuse.

I am dealing with my own emotions about this and feel I can put them mostly aside, but my question here is how does one make progress in building rapport with someone with a history like that and actually get them to a point where they are talking about issues?

I am in CMH and we don't have true specialties, but my experience with DCS cases have been a bit more mild (usually substance abuse).
