Punisher cinema - thoughts and criticisms

Punisher/Daredevil series - I thought these were really great, and Jon Bernthal was absolutely the best Punisher on screen. The saga between him and Billy Russo was awesome, however season 2 didn’t hit quite as hard. I enjoyed Russo’s story/look in season two but I think writers dropped the ball a bit with the conclusion and that it would have been more impactful if Madani was killed by Russo in their final scene together. Overall I thought the series was quite awesome though.

Punisher War Zone - I really liked this instalment and I felt it was the best of the punisher movies. Ray Stevenson was a great choice to play Punisher. Visually, Jigsaw looked great but Dominic West’s forced, way over the top New York gangster voice was not only obnoxious but its inauthenticity was distracting and pulled me out of the story. He sounded almost identical to his McNulty serial killer voice in The Wire - it was a cartoonish accent and just plain awful. But other than this, I loved the film.

Punisher 2004 - Just wow, this is by far the worst of Punisher cinema. Thomas Jane is probably a decent actor, but he was simply handcuffed in this cheap, cliche Hollywood-hack fest by writing that attempts to be witty and stylish but is in reality shallow and thoughtless. John Travolta, who has gotten better in his later years, was just really strange as Howard Saint. He really came across as a true cult member, disconnected and disassociated from the character and his fellow on screen performers. And why create this stupid Howard character when the comic books already have a litany of great villains? John Pinette and Ben Foster are supposed to be the film’s comic relief, but absolutely nothing funny happens when they are on screen. Let’s just say when I saw The Punisher rubbing a popsicle over a man’s back while he hung upside down, I knew things were heading downhill. I really can’t say enough about how bad this movie was…and what in God’s name was up with the hit man serenading Castle with that bizarre song before trying to kill him? Strange and totally out of place. The only cool thing was Kevin Nash as the Russian, and frankly (pardon the pun) seeing Nash get stabbed for real on screen was invariably worth the price of admission.

Punisher 1989 - Not terrible, but when compared to Tim Burton’s Batman, released the same year, this film left a bit to be desired. Dolph Lundgren wasn’t a bad choice at all, and there was some amusing performances and entertaining action. However the film’s budget seemed lacking and its villains mediocre. And worst of all…why no skull shirt for Punisher!? What the hell!

Anyway, just my thoughts, regardless I absolutely love The Punisher character and despite some flaws (mainly in the 2004 movie) I’m thankful that all of these movies/episodes exist.
