First encounter with Cougar

Sorry if this has already been asked, but I got the animation when you cannot move, and he walked by. I immediately mapped the area, but no Cougar face. My main question is, after you leave the area for a while (days?), I have to assume this "resets" him and you can come back for a while before he reclaims his territory. If not, this totally sucks and ruins the game for me (I think). Thanks in advance.
