I love writing stories for playthrough, naming each character and creating a backstory for how they ended up in the wilderness. Some went down in planes, but others ended up there in other ways. I often keep the notes as their diary and I write each of them in their own style.

Marjorie is a tough, butch, defensive, nature-loving and somewhat anti-social woodswoman who grew up on Great Bear, raised by her father and Aunt Mina, both of whom had significant wilderness skills. She knew the Collapse would get worse and in a way welcomed it, since she preferred to be out in the woods and away from civilization, which she'd come to see as a disease. When both her father and Mina had passed away and the island was almost entirely deserted, she set off on her own, but found she was reliant on "civ stuff" more than she'd like. She copes with using her skills completely alone for the first time in a place where there are no fallbacks.

The Samanthas belong to a storyline where the island is used by a secretive high-tech operation that develops enhanced super-survivor soldiers and tests them on abandoned Great Bear. Periodically, a Samantha clone is released and tracked surreptitiously. They are unaware of their status.

Edward is a 22 year old gay man who lived with his virulently homophobic family in Milton. He made plans to escape with his boyfriend from Milton and hole up in the Far Territories, where no one would bother them, and had stockpiled extensive supplies and survival equipment, including a rifle and ammo. His plans were well-laid, but he was forced to escape early during a blizzard and found his cache missing. His boyfriend never made it to the meeting point. He set off for the Far Territories alone.
