I love the frontier comforts update so much, and since I still need to eat irl, figured I'd try my best to recreate the bannocks as accurately as possible since they seem really easy to make.
I'm a man of science, I bought a kitchen scale solely for this experiment, so I'll be sure to keep you all updated, if you even care, in the comments, or in the edits of I can figure them out.
Tools:
1 cast iron pan, 1 kitchen scale, Great value flour, Water from the faucet, Olive oil
Hypothesis: just flour and water, I believe it will make for a very bland snack that's not too filling, but bland snacks are all you need when youre out of arrows and trapped in a building, waiting for the timberwolf pack to move on. And that's the fun of science! I'm giving the bannock a chance to prove my hypothesis wrong
Update 1: .15 kgs of water were added to .2 kgs of flour, just as the game instructed, and mixed until a simple dough formed, I will allow it to hydrate for 10 minutes, as that's the prep time in game
Update 2: mixture formed a VERY sticky dough, I initially avoided adding extra flour to the work surface to maintain the ratio as closely as possible, but that soon became unfeasible. Waiting for the oil and the pan to heat up now. Cooking over medium heat, and though there is no flipping mechanic in the game, I will allow myself the luxury of flipping the bannock once it is cooking
Update 3: the game version takes around 30 minutes to cook, but mine seemed to be done after 18 minutes, both sides are nicely browned and I feel I would burn them if kept on any longer. They are a lot more firm and stiff than first anticipated, now I wait for them to cool
Final update: well, can't say I was disappointed, it followed my hypothesis. Bland beyond compare with hints of traces of the taste of uncooked flour make for a poor snack, but it would be preferable to starvation. I added salt and butter, but it only helped minimally. It has a chewy texture with bits of crunch where the bread touched the pan. Though it notably does not put off a lot of crumbs, and can be put through some impressive punishment and still not shatter the crust. I believe it would indeed make good food for the road as TLD puts it, I can see it staying together in the bottom of a pack without too much mess or fuss. The only drawback is the flavor, or lack thereof. No doubt this could be made more delicious with more expressive base ingredients, but this was an experiment for science and accuracy first and foremost, I only attempted to add flavor after tasting the whole product. 1/10 for flavor, 10/10 for weight to calorie ratio, and not attracting wolves, also helping bump your cooking skill to get to the cooler stuff. I will link a picture post below once it is up
