(Light spoilers) Question about purpose of Bill's philosophy

Post Body
So I'm playing the game again and was wondering why ND focused on this aspect of Bill and his relationships so much. During the entire time of Joel and Ellie being with him he shows a dislike for other people and claims that it's better to work alone. He openly says to Joel that having a partner is a good way to get yourself killed, and that the only way to go is alone.
I'm wondering the purpose of his whole anti-partner focus relative to the narrative. Joel still stays with Ellie after this, and grows to care for her a lot. Bill's whole charade didn't really affect Joel and Ellie's relationship at all so what was the purpose?
