The major cities of Spain are rocked by rioting Feb 10th-11th, 1901. Riots continued into the night in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Granada and Valladolid until they were put down by force by the guardia civil. The rioters were largely liberal agitators, anti-clericalists and students who targeted police, Jesuits and Franciscans. The event that is the target of the anger is the upcoming marriage of the Princess of Asturias, the eldest sister of the young king, to Prince Carlos of Bourbon-Two Sicilies who had been granted the title of Infante of Spain the week before. The marriage had been planned to ensure the ruling Bourbon dynasty remain in power if young Alfonso should fail to produce an heir, but Spanish liberals and republicans strongly opposed him. Prince Carlos's father had been involved in the Third Carlist War as a general for the conservative Carlists and was reviled for his sack of the city of Cuenca. Liberals feared that the match would increase the influence of conservatives and the absolutist Carlists in court.
On the day of the wedding, the streets leading to the Royal Palace were barricaded for fear of the protesters and a vast number of troops deployed through the capital. There were no major incidents, however, and the ceremony took place on February 14th, 1901, in the chapel of the Royal Palace of Madrid.
