Is it just me or one of the biggest lost opportunities was the Beach Boys not being able to effectively use Carl's voice in his final years?
I think most of us can agree that after he got sober in the late 70s (and until his ultimately death), he sounded refreshed and renewed, and his voice only got better and stronger in those years. Unfortunately, with the exception possibly of BB 85 (which was the best Carl Solo album that never was), the Beach Boys didn't take full advantage of this, putting out substandard, sub-commercial material during some of Carl's best years.
Given that Carl probably had the most commercial sounding voice at the time (Not dissimilar to Christopher Cross, Chicago, or many other soft-rock titans at the time), work with a complimentary producer and material would've probably done him and the Boys well.
Of course, some of this stasis was due to Carl himself, who seemed resigned to coasting to Mike Love's oldies act (and was the main objector to the Paley material).
What do you guys think?
Ironically, Kokomo is proof in point on Carl’s voice. That song wouldn’t have been a hit without Carl on the chorus.

Carl on the title track, Shelter, Pacific Coast Highway, From There to Back Again (sorry Al) would’ve been perfect. Brian should still do Summer’s Gone.
