I just couldn’t take it anymore. There seems to be an extremely large amount of drivers on the Texas highways and interstates that do not understand basic rules of merging when entering a highway or freeway using an on ramp. Vehicle after vehicle merging with no turn signal, not even a glance at the traffic, 30 mph below the flow of the freeway. ZERO attempt to match the flow and find a spot. Instant chaos and they don’t even know it’s happening.
Texas Transportation Code 545 states: When entering a freeway or highway from an on ramp drivers MUST YIELD to traffic already on the freeway EVEN IF THERE IS NO SIGN! The state figures we are smart enough to know and remember this so they didn’t spend 5 million on yield signs y’all are just gonna run over anyway. Boy were they wrong.
It also goes on as follows and I’m paraphrasing. You can see the entire code here Although it’s courteous drivers already on the highway do NOT have to move over or otherwise make room for you if you’re merging. In fact research shows that moving over and slowing down for merging vehicles is a main cause of accidents and freeway back ups.
Texas law goes as far to say if the vehicle entering can not enter traffic without causing a problem it must move to the shoulder or STOP! Now this isn’t always feasible and there are conditions where it’s tough to match speed before you merge especially for cargo type vehicles but at least stop the blatant blind merge.
I’m so irritated at the lack of common sense I now flat refuse to give up my lane. If a merging vehicle hits me it is their fault. Accelerate!!!! It’s not gonna blow your motor up to open her up when you merge so you don’t kill 6 kids a grandma and 3 family pets.
Some of this can be explained by the newcomers from other states. Please learn our laws ignorance is not a valid defense in court. The rest is just more ignorance or entitlement and either way you are a burden a danger breaking the law. As more drivers become aware of the law you blind mergers get increasingly more likely to hit someone who’s over your ownership of the road.
