How Does the Game know what animation on a NIF should be played?

So I've noticed that all the animations attack 1,2, death, and idle are all in the same nif file. How does the game know when to play each animation? Does it use timestamps to say which animation is which? (By this I mean should idle be within the first 5 seconds on every nif, the attack next 5 secs and so on). Really any help would be great! I made a bunch of new models for creatures, specifically daedra, that were included in other titles to add to morrowind just having trouble getting the animations to play properly in game.
