I'm re-watching the 6 episode 'event series' again and... boy it isn't good is it. A few episodes showed promise but the mythology episodes were a mess.
Gillian's wig, both she and David almost parodying themselves... The clunky script writing/dialogue.
The series which followed felt a little more structured and I do think David and Gillian felt more comfortable back in their Mulder/Scully personas but then the whole show just ended on such a disappointment.
I wondered what others thoughts were on that reboot, was it worth it/should they have left it alone? What would you have done different? Could the show ever return?
For me, personally, I think they should have made the 6-episode event series one standalone story, like a mini 'Homeland' type story - a bit more gritty, less about UFOs/aliens and more focused on government cover-ups etc. I feel like trying to re-tread old X-Files ground and have 'monster of the week' episodes and stuff like that only worked in the olden days of 23-24 episode seasons. For a 6-episode run they were trying to do too much.
And yes - Gillian's wig was terrible. When did Scully ever have a middle parting? Why was her hair so flat and lifeless? I'm sure they could have modelled a wig more on her how her hair looked in seasons 5/6/7 etc. Okay, it wasn't really a massive issue but it was a bit of an eyesore.
Gillian has made it pretty clear she wouldn't ever want to return to the role of Scully and to be honest I don't blame her and what is there really left to do with the character anyway?
I would still love to see an X-Files type show in this modern era but I do think they'd need to reboot it with a fresh new cast/characters. Perhaps to have David's Mulder character in a few episodes at the start but then maybe he dies or something and the baton is passed onto someone else.
The door could be open for 'cameos' from any of the previous cast members, should they so wish, but starting over with a young new cast would work much better.
Thoughts? Would you ever watch X-Files without Mulder and Scully?
