AstroTech has some new eyepieces of particular interest to most redditors here.
60 degree flat field eyepeices in 1.25 size, from 5.5mm to 25mm.
These are ideal for reducing "comma" effect at the edges of a reflector and have a reasonably wide 60 degree viewing angle. Better than the typical 50s of a Plossel that most scopes come with.
These would pair very well with the short focal length of the most popular scopes here, 8 and 10 inch Dobsons.
They also dropped the price on one of the best deals in telescopes: the AT102ED. Down $60 to $589 it is a scope that can hang with the very best 4 inch scopes out there and is a perfect complement to a Dobson or taking to a dark sky.
4 inch refractors have no central obstruction and lenses have less loss than a mirror, so a 4 inch refractor delivers the light of a very nice 6 inch Reflector or a middle of the road 8 inch reflector. It is also going to be free of the optical effects like coma common to reflectors.
This does require a mount and a diagonal, and fully "Kitted out" you could be looking at $2K or so... this is definitely a bigger league item but it is also a "buy once, cry once" kind of product. No matter how deep you get into astronomy this will be a good scope.
I am new here, so a quick Astro bio:
I started with a toy store 50mm scope as a kid. Then I was fortunate to get access to a C10. Later I bought a Meade ETX.
Currently I own a 13.1 Dobson by Dobstuff and the AT102ED mounted on an EQ tripod.
I love both scopes, they both do amazing, but different things.
