Heya, my nephew (12m) is about to get shipped off to the Sparks, NV adolescent boys program for severe depression. I (38f) am the only one in the entire family that doesn't buy into the "Jesus cures mental illness" philosophy.
I also have worked in adolescent social services in one capacity or another since 2006. Teen Challenge has always had a bad rap in this field for oh-so-many-reasons, not least of which is lack of transparency.
But of course, "well I talked to the directors and they seem like good people" is apparently worth more than my input, as well as, "This location is probably different from those other ones that were investigated for abuse...."
So I'm looking for input from people who have experience at this location, whether having been a "student" there, staff member, or just part of the local community that knows about such things.
My nephew and I have always been close as I'm one of the few people in his life that doesn't see mental & emotional struggles as a "sin problem" or lack of faith. I'm incredibly concerned about his well-being in such a fucked-up, shame inducing program. Any feedback or things to look for is appreciated.
Additional info: I'm several states away as well. Family members have kept things from me bc they think I'm a worldly influence (gasp--tattoos and not a churchgoer.)
