Recently among the memes and joking discussions, this subreddit has been hit with karma-whores. These people go to lengths rarely seen here to farm useless internet points, such as faking terminal illnesses, lying, and other such acts. Some of these stories have been so convincing that some people have been gifted Reddit Silver, Gold, and Platinum.
Normally, this would see little attention, as some seemingly dumb posts gain Reddit awards, no biggie. But these blatant lies people pull to "shittymorph" this sub and just cure their boredom have accumulated thousands of karma, and hundreds of dollars in Reddit awards.
Normally, I wouldn't care and neither would others. Fake internet points mean little outside of flexing, but these posts are starting to become malicious in the fact that people who are none-the-wiser are spending real money to guild these posts that come out as fake "for the meme" days later. These people who want to make the lives of people who say they have "hours left to live" have to find out themselves that they wasted 6 ish dollars to reward a board kid who came up with a convincing story.
It is absolutely disgusting to see a fake post lying about having cancer being given 78 Reddit Platinum, as well has hundreds of Reddit Silver and Gold. Only counting the Platinum, more than $468 dollars of awards have been gifted to lying, decieving, disgusting human beings. For the sake of this sub, there needs to be some type of system to prove that you have a life threatening illness for your pity. Any type of system would be an improvement.
It's sad that I have to say that it's not okay to fake cancer. It truly is. For those who guilded u/ColeArt and contributed to the $1000 dollars of his fake post, I apologise that some people are fucking ludicrous. It's not a matter of recognizing these posts are fake, but nipping them in the bud and stopping the fake posts before they start cropping up again and again. God bless.
