Help with an ethernet to Usb adapter

I use a powerline adapter for my desktop and it works fine, but my laptop doesn't have an ethernet port, so I bought an ethernet to usb adapter.
The usb adapter works if I use a straight ethernet connection, but when I use the connection from my powerline adapter it doesn't work.
Does anyone know how to make this setup function?
