What is a good, and affordable antivirus for Mac?

My local Apple repair shop guy told me Avast is not that great for Macs. I forgot to ask him what he would recommend, but it be nice to hear some consensus here about what is a decent antivirus/malware that's either free or affordable. Thank you!
P.S., I have the Avast free edition and it seems like it may have let a virus fall through the cracks (not confirmed).
