MacBook pro won't wake up or restart. Details inside.

I own a 2008 MacBook pro (before the unibodies came out) that won't start up out of sleep, and when I hold the power button to shut down the computer, upon startup, the screen remains black and the cd drive gears up in preparation for the Mac sound of boot up, but the sound of booting doesn't come, nor does the white screen of Life show itself.
I have tried restarting over and over only to get the same results, and when I toggle the brightness level, that doesn't seem to affect anything.
